Favorite Movies of 2012

With the Oscars tonight, I guess I finally have to reveal my favorite 10 movies from 2012. Otherwise how will you get to sleep at night with that gnawing curiosity in your gut? The 10:

10. 21 Jump Street - I thought I was going to hate this movie. And it ended up being 10,000 times the comedy it had any right to be. Plus, how about that Channing Tatum? What a charming dreamboat.

9. Moonrise Kingdom - I think I’d have to give back my diploma to Emerson if a Wes Anderson movie wasn’t one of my favorites of the year.

8. Zero Dark Thirty - Kathryn Bigelow did an amazing job taking one of the biggest stories in my lifetime and condensing into a thoughtful, provocative, and incredibly tense film. Plus, Andy Dwyer as a soldier! Burt Macklin finally made it.

7. Dark Knight Rises - Flawed? Yes. But it also was super duper sweet and had a bunch of awesome scenes and oh man, you remember when the plane turned upside down? Or Tom Hardy’s voice? Or SOME DAYS YOU JUST CAN’T GET RID OF A BOMB. Or like, when Batman and Catwoman like kiss and blow stuff up and wear awesome costumes?

6. Argo - Do you remember when Ben Affleck was a punchline? That was a thing for like a decade. I just, I just don’t know what to do with all of this.

5. Cabin in the Woods - I still don’t see why everyone was freaking out about the “twist” ending, it didn’t seem to be much of a twist to me, but I loved this one. It was scary, legitimately funny (something horror comedies rarely are), played with the conventions of the genre, AND had Bradley Whitford. Bradley Whitford for life, bro.

4. Beasts of the Southern Wild - Yeah, I cried after this movie. And the next morning, too. You wanna fight about it?

3. Avengers - This movie had explosions and aliens and Captain America being cool and Tony Stark being cool and Thor being cool and Hawkeye…being pretty lame, but the Hulk was really cool. This movie was cool.

2. Django Unchained - I like spaghetti Westerns and I hate racists. I also have a weird fetish for this Christoph Waltz video.

1. Paranorman - For all of you people who didn’t see this movie, what were you doing? It was clever, inventive, funny, and felt like the kind of 80s horror adventure film that just doesn’t get made anymore.
